FOR 2010 JACOB'S PILLOW DANCE FESTIVAL

What:
David Hallberg, celebrated principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre, will join Jacoby & Pronk and Dancers for the ensemble's exclusive engagement at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, July 21-25.

Hallberg, who trained at the Paris Opera Ballet School, has become a standout performer on the American dance scene in recent years. In his recent retrospective on the past decade in dance, chief dance critic of The New York Times Alastair Macaulay stated "I watch David Hallberg and believe that America has never produced a finer example of the princely, noble type of dancer." Macaulay has previously praised Hallberg as being "prodigiously fluent in technique," concluding that "his brilliance...seems an all-time peak of accomplishment and style."

Drew Jacoby and Rubinald Pronk have performed with some of the world's most acclaimed contemporary ballet companies including Christopher Wheeldon's Morphoses. In addition to Hallberg they are joined by Shirley Esseboom, formerly of Nederlands Dans Theatre and Victor Mateos Arellano of Dresden SemperOper Ballett, exclusively at Jacob's Pillow. This engagment offers a rare opportunity to see international dance stars in the intimate setting of the Pillow's Doris Duke Theatre, a versatile dance space with 220 seats. This year, more than 50 companies and hundreds of emerging and master dance artists from as close as New York City and as far as Australia will arrive in Becket, Massachusetts for a singular celebration of the expansive art of movement. Jacob's Pillow, the world-renowned international dance center and National Historic Landmark located in the Berkshires, announces its 78th Festival season today. Highlights of the 2010 Festival include the U.S. debut of The Göteborg Ballet of Sweden; three world premieres co-commissioned by Jacob's Pillow from diverse young choreographers Kyle Abraham, Monica Bill Barnes, and Camille A. January 5, 2010 (Becket, MA) - In celebration of the dance company's 25th anniversary, Jacob's Pillow Dance and MASS MoCA team up to co-present Stephen Petronio Company in I Drink the Air Before Me at MASS MoCA's Hunter Center on Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10, at 8pm. Petronio is acclaimed for his lush, sweeping performance landscapes enriched by artful pairings of contemporary music and movement. Roslyn Sulcas of The New York Times writes, "He is one of the few contemporary dance makers who have created an instantly recognizable style...fresh and unpredictable...infused with emotional texture and wit." November 30, 2009 (Becket, MA) -- Ella Baff, Executive Director of Jacob's Pillow Dance, has been named one of the Top 25 Most Powerful and Influential Leaders in the Arts by Inside Arts. One of the few arts presenters and the only dance industry leader named, Baff is listed among fellow arts luminaries, including Rocco Landesman, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, and Robert Redford, actor and President of the Sundance Institute. Inside Arts is the official magazine of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters.

Baff has served as Executive Director of Jacob's Pillow Dance for twelve years. Under her leadership, the Pillow has substantially increased its international programming, built its first endowment, created new artistic development programs, developed an audience engagement program of over 200 free events, and established the Jacob's Pillow Dance Award. She has received several honors throughout her career, including the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Ministry of Culture, the Association of Performing Arts Presenters William Dawson Award for Programmatic Excellence, and an Honorary Doctorate from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

October 14, 2009 (Becket, Mass.) - In its first preview of the 2010 Festival, Jacob's Pillow Dance announces three world premieres which will be created at the Pillow in the coming months and then presented as part of the upcoming Festival. Monica Bill Barnes, Kyle Abraham, and Camille A. Brown are each creating new work at the Pillow through its Creative Development Residency program this fall and spring. These artists, all young choreographers and artistic directors of New York City-based contemporary dance companies, will spend time at the Pillow developing new work, which will then premiere as part of the 2010 Festival. August 16, 2009 (Becket, Mass.) - Closing out this year's Festival season in the Ted Shawn Theatre is the highly regarded Ballet Hispanico, a prominent American ensemble devoted to exploring, preserving, and celebrating the beauty and joy of Latino dance and culture.
