JACOB'S PILLOW RECEIVES "SAVE AMERICA'S TREASURES" GRANT
World-renowned arts organization employs Chicago Albumen Works of Housatonic for archival restoration project, stimulating local economy
March 10, 2010 - (Becket, MA.) Jacob's Pillow Dance, America's longest-running international dance festival, has received a grant from the federal program Save America's Treasures, a national effort to preserve buildings and artifacts that are important to the country's history. "Save America's Treasures invests in our nation's irreplaceable legacy of buildings, documents, collections, and artistic works," commented First Lady Michelle Obama, Honorary Chairman of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, in a provided statement. "These awards empower communities all over the country to rescue and restore this priceless heritage, and ensure that future generations continue to learn from the voices, ideas, events and people represented by these projects". One of 41 organizations nationwide receiving grants, the Pillow has been awarded $59,000 to support the digitization of a sizable portion of its extensive archival photo collection, allowing for both preservation of rare materials and greater public access. Hailed as "the dance center of the nation and possibly the world" (The New York Times), Jacob's Pillow is a National Historic Landmark and a cultural "mecca" located in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts.
