Jacob's Pillow Dance

He began his career with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and three years later became a principal dancer with The Joffrey Ballet. In 1964, he began dancing with the newly-formed Harkness Ballet, where he became known as an outstanding dramatic presence in landmark ballets created for him, including Stuart Hodes' The Abyss, and John Butler's Sebastian and After Eden. The latter of these was created for Rhodes and his wife, Lone Isaksen. When the Harkness disbanded, Rhodes joined Het Nationale Ballet. From 1971-1973, he co-directed Milwaukee Ballet. Rhodes also danced with Pennsylvania Ballet from 1972-1978. While a principal dancer with the Eliot Feld Ballet, he worked with Carla Fracci in Italy. After a tenure as Chairman of the Dance Department at New York University, he spent a decade as Artistic Director of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal. In 2008, Rhodes received the coveted Dance Magazine Award for his contributions to the field.
