Annie-B Parson started Big Dance Theater in 1991 with its first
performances at Dance Theater Workshop. Her subsequent choreography with Big Dance has appeared in venues including: The American Dance Festival, Jacob's Pillow, Spoleto Festival, MCA/Chicago, The Walker Arts Center, The Kitchen, The Guggenheim, The Performing Garage, On The Boards/Seattle, UCLA Live! and for three seasons at Classic Stage Company. Internationally her work with Big Dance has appeared at many festival and theaters in Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands and The Republic of Georgia. Big Dance Theater received an OBIE in 2000 and Parson received a Bessie Award in 2002 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007. Parson, along with her co-founder Paul Lazar, was honored in 2007 with the first Jacob's Pillow Award for Creativity. Parson is currently choreographing for David Byrne, OTHERSHORE at Baryshnikov Arts Center, Cynthia Hopkins, ETHEL, (a string quartet) as well as Big Dance for a commission for a premiere in Lyon, France. Parson has taught choreography at ETW/NYU/Tisch School of the Arts for the past 15 years. She has also taught nationally and internationally, most recently in Tokyo and Spoleto, Italy. She was currently featured in BOMB magazine and wrote a piece for Dance/USA on the state of dance/theater in the U.S. Parson's relationship with Jacob's Pillow is multi-dimensional. In addition to its receipt of the first Jacob's Pillow Creativity Award, Big Dance Theater first performed at the Pillow in 2000, returned in 2002 and again in 2007. Big Dance has also had several Creative Development Residencies here. In addition, Parson choreographed one section of the Pillow-commissioned Seven Deadly Sins in 2001. This year will be her first season as Program Director for Choreographers Lab.
