The Experience
Paul Lazar founded Big Dance Theater in 1991 with Annie-B Parson. His
workwith the company includes conceiving, directing and/or performing in such works as PLAN B, Mac Wellman's Antigone, CSC's Another Telepathic Thing, Shunkin, Mac Wellman's Girl Gone as well as dance/theater adaptations of Tristan Tzara's The Gas Heart, Ă–don von Horvath's Don Juan Returns from the War and Fassbinder's Bremen Freedom. He received a BESSIE in 2002. Apart from his work with Big Dance Theater, Lazar has appeared in The Wooster Group's Brace Up, Emperor Jones and The Hairy Ape. Other acting credits include Marie Irene Fornes' Mudd, Richard Maxwell's Cowboys and Indians and CSC's The False Servant, directed by Brian Kulick. Lazar directed Major Bang for The Foundry Theatre at Saint Ann 's Warehouse. His film career includes roles in Silence of the Lambs, Beloved, Lorenzo's Oil, Philadelphia and The Host. He is an instructor at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and at SUNY/Purchase. He has also taught at The Bill Esper Studio, The Michael Howard Studio and Rutgers University. This year will be Lazar's first season as Program Director for Choreographers Lab.
