Ted Shawn

Edwin Myers Shawn was born on October 21, 1891 in Kansas City, Missouri,

and grew up in Denver, CO. While studying to become a minister, Shawn suffered a bout of diphtheria at the age of 19, leaving him temporarily paralyzed. On the advice of his physician, he took up dance as a form of physical therapy. Dancing cured Shawn's paralysis and left him with a passion that would guide and direct him for the rest of his life.

Although Shawn's first dance experience was with a Metropolitan Opera ballerina and he achieved some success as part of an exhibition ballroom team, it was meeting Ruth St. Denis in 1914 that would set his artistic life in motion. They were married that same year.

During the next 15 years, the activities of their Denishawn Company and School changed the course of dance history; most of today's modern dancers trace their ancestry to Denishawn. It was Shawn who first recognized Martha Graham's potential, and he was instrumental in shaping the early careers of Charles Weidman, Doris Humphrey and Jack Cole. While St. Denis provided most of the creative sparks ("I can inspire like Hell" was her own assessment of her talents), Shawn had the business sense to make Denishawn a coast-to-coast success.

Shawn and St. Denis separated in 1930 and this also brought about the dissolution of the Denishawn Company. With the purchase that same year of a rundown farm in the Berkshires known as Jacob's Pillow, Shawn laid the groundwork both for his revolutionary company of men dancers and America's oldest dance festival. In March 1933, Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers gave their first, historic, all-male performance in Boston. By May 1940 when Shawn disbanded the group, the Company had danced for over a million people in all of the United States, in Canada, Cuba and England, having challenged and irrevocably changed the course of American dance. For the final three decades of his life, Shawn became a major impresario, bringing dance to mainstream America through the theater and school at Jacob's Pillow. To promote his principle of the importance and universality of dance, Shawn introduced countless foreign companies to American audiences, provided opportunities for promising young artists, and trained countless students in a full range of dance styles. Shawn orchestrated premieres by both the established and emerging talents of his day including Agnes de Mille, Anton Dolin, Pearl Lang, Merce Cunningham, Anna Sokolow, Alvin Ailey, and Robert Joffrey.

There are a number of "firsts" achieved by Ted Shawn during his lifetime:

The first American man to achieve a world reputation in dance
Conceived, choreographed and appeared in one of the first dance films, the Thomas Edison Company's Dances of the Ages in 1912
The first American dancer to be awarded an honorary degree by an American college
The first male dancer to be listed in Who's Who in America.

Shawn was honored with the Capezio Award (1957), the Dance Magazine Award (1970) and he was knighted by the King of Denmark for his efforts on behalf of the Royal Danish Ballet. Posthumously, Shawn was named as one of America's Irreplaceable Dance Treasures by the Dance Heritage Coalition in 2000.

In spite of declining health, Shawn remained at the helm of Jacob's Pillow until his death in 1972 at the age of 80. For most of his career he encouraged his students to call him "Papa" and his legacy as the artistic father for generations of dancers and teachers suggests that "Papa" was a very apt name indeed.

Ruth St. Denis

A cigarette poster changed Ruth St. Denis' (1879-1968) life in 1906, an

unlikely event which eventually altered the course of modern dance in America. She was then an eccentric showgirl named Ruth Dennis, touring through Buffalo in David Belasco's theater company. When she spotted an advertisement for Egyptian Deities in a Buffalo drugstore, the image of the goddess Iris conjured up the idea of a new kind of dance-theater which might tell the entire story of a civilization through movement.

Within a few months, she had emerged as Ruth St. Denis in a solo concert on Broadway, inaugurating a decade of triumphs in various exotic dances fashioned from the folklore of Japan, China, and India. Although these dances sprang from a deep spirituality, St. Denis later confessed, "I knew that all the time I was dancing about God and Faith and the Spirit, most of the audience was only looking at my bare feet and my revealing costume." She was sketched by Rodin, courted by Stanford White, admired by Martha Graham (who would become her student) and pursued by Ted Shawn (who became both her partner and her husband).

Any performance by "Miss Ruth" was distinguished by her remarkable stage presence. Her solos are difficult to reproduce, as they demand charisma, deft manipulation of costumes and props, and a profound belief in the mystical power of the dances. Through Denishawn (1914-1929), the company and school she founded with Ted Shawn, St. Denis made her greatest impact on audiences and on a generation of disciples including Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman. The visions stimulated by that cigarette poster were allowed to take shape in the elaborate spectacles staged by Denishawn.

The dissolution of Denishawn led St. Denis deeper into her spiritual nature and into long periods of artistic oblivion, resulting in such desperate measures as working the graveyard shift in an aircraft factory. Her long life accommodated a number of declines and resurgences, with most of the latter supplied by Shawn through regular stints at Jacob's Pillow , beginning with a revival of Radha in 1941. She continued to dance well into her eighties, characterizing her later performances with an unusually modest self-assessment: "I move with remembered beauty." St. Denis died in 1968, and her portrait still hangs beside the proscenium in the Ted Shawn Theatre. Her works are occasionally revived at the Pillow, including a memorable 1982 performance by Cynthia Gregory.

Barton Mumaw

Born in 1912 in Pennsylvania, Barton Mumaw was raised in Florida, where he

saw a life-changing performance by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn in 1928. In 1930 he studied at Denishawn, a pioneering school that also helped to launch the careers of dance legends Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman, and performed with the company the following year at New York's Lewisohn Stadium. During the next two seasons, Mumaw toured with Ted Shawn and His Dancers, and he was with Shawn in his very first summers at a Massachusetts farm that would later become known as Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival.

From 1933 to 1940, Mumaw was a primary force in the groundbreaking tours by Ted Shawn's Men Dancers, creating leading roles and performing in more than 750 cities across the U.S., Canada, and England. After the Men Dancers disbanded, Mumaw launched a solo recital tour and was hailed as "the American Nijinsky". As a soldier during World War II, he performed in a variety of shows for American troops. He continued in popular entertainment after the war, appearing on Broadway and in touring productions of such shows as Annie Get Your Gun, Out of This World, and My Fair Lady, working with choreographers Helen Tamiris, Agnes de Mille, and Hanya Holm.

After Shawn's death in 1972, Mumaw devoted himself to perpetuating the Shawn legacy through such activities as staging Kinetic Molpai for the Alvin Ailey Company and teaching master classes and workshops throughout the country. He continued a lifelong association with Jacob's Pillow, including stints as Associate Director as well as serving as a frequent performer and teacher. His last dance appearance was in the Pillow's Ted Shawn Theatre in 1981, and he returned the following year to stage several Shawn works in commemoration of the Pillow's 50th anniversary. It was during these anniversary celebrations that Mumaw was filmed for the award-winning documentary, The Men Who Danced. He also coached revivals for a 1991 Shawn centennial program known as Jacob's Pillow's Men Dancers, seen at New York's Joyce Theater and on tour both nationally and internationally.

In 1986, Mumaw collaborated with Jane Sherman on a critically-acclaimed memoir, Barton Mumaw, Dancer: From Denishawn to Jacob's Pillow and Beyond. He revealed the personal side of his relationship with Shawn in the book, which was reissued in paperback last year and provided the occasion for Mumaw's final visit to the Pillow for an autograph party in 2000. Barton Mumaw died in 2001 at the age of 88. The final resting place for Mumaw's remains is at Jacob's Pillow, where his image on the theatre's weathervane (inspired by his Bach Bourrée) continues to preside.
