Camille A. Brown and Dancers
June 30-July 4, 2010 • WORLD PREMIERE • PILLOW CO-COMMISSION
A scintillating dancer described as "a pixie-ish powerhouse with the determined air of a high priestess" (San Francisco Chronicle), Camille A. Brown creates lush and powerful work that has been commissioned by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Philadanco, and Urban Bush Women. Energy, style, and personality are hallmarks of her ensemble, performing a program full of soul and spontaneity. After a crowd-pleasing performance at the Festival 2010 Season Opening Gala, Camille A. Brown and Dancers return for a week-long engagement that includes excerpts from The Groove to Nobody's Business, which premiered on Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; The Evolution Of A Secured Feminine, with music by Ella Fitzgerald, Betty Carter, and Nancy Wilson; New Second Line, a emotional and uplifting work inspired by Hurricane Katrina and the resilience of the people of New Orleans; and a world premiere co-commissioned by Jacob's Pillow and created in part during a Pillow Creative Development Residency.
"Camille Brown, a fabulous performer, turns sexy into funny and eccentric. Bravo!" - Wendy Perron, Dance Magazine
"Ms. Brown ... mixes modern dance techniques with West African dance elements. But her personal physical style, with its focused bursts of energy and frozen images that explode into motion, colors her group works very differently." - Roslyn Sulcas, The New York Times
