A flurry of undulating solos, dynamic duets, and sensual ensemble pieces, acclaimed choreographer Karole Armitage's new Three Theories is an explosion of dance. Inspired by the book The Elegant Universe by physicist Brian Greene, Three Theories explores scientific themes including quantum mechanics, relativity, and string theory, all through Armitage's signature brand of athletic contemporary ballet. This evening-length work is set to a varied score including music by maverick composer Rhys Chatham, the lyrical, haunting tones of Sangeeta Shankar's South Indian classical carnatic violin music, and John Luther Adams's evocative "Dark Waves." Karole Armitage has worked with Mikhail Baryshnikov, Merce Cunningham, and Madonna, and her dance repertoire stretches from ballet to Broadway. Her unmistakable voice pushes the boundaries among movement, music, and the visual arts to embody dance that "explodes in every sense and dazzles the eye" and remains "vividly imprinted in your memory." In addition to her company's week-long engagement in July, Karole Armitage created a new work on the Ballet Program participants of The School at Jacob's Pillow. This piece premiered at the Season Opening Gala on June 19.
