Pichet Klunchun Dance Company
July 14-July 18, 2010 • THAILAND • U.S. PREMIERE
From an ensemble of glistening Thai goddesses, a lone man emerges in jeans. In Chui Chai (Transformation), internationally acclaimed performer Pichet Klunchun entwines mesmerizing traditional Thai dance with virtuosic contemporary movement. Recognized worldwide for his collaboration with French choreographer Jerome Bel, Klunchun merges traditional Thai dance with the ongoing evolution of contemporary dance; click here read a Village Voice article about Klunchun's work.
In Chui Chai, applauded as "gorgeous from start to finish" (The New York Times), Klunchun combines dazzling, intricate costumes, inspired choreography, and haunting music to transport audiences to a dream world of ancient beauty and drama. Dancers employ the classical masked dance of Thailand, kohn, a style regarded as one of the most refined performing arts that was originally limited to the royal court. Performing stories from Thai literature, dancers don elaborate costumes and headdresses, in stark contrast to Klunchun and his modern, contemporary solos.
