The Göteborg Ballet
August 18-August 22, 2010 • SWEDEN • U.S. DEBUT
Johannes Öhman directed Pillow favorite Stockholm 59° North prior to leading this company of classically trained dancers who have mastered contemporary innovation. Based in Sweden, The Göteborg Ballet has become the largest contemporary dance company in the Nordic countries and includes dancers from seventeen countries. In its U.S. company debut at the Pillow, the company will perform 3xBoléro, thrillingly diverse production of three works by acclaimed international choreographers.
3xBoléro includes three distinct works:
Walking Mad by Johan Inger with music by Ravel and "Fur Alina" by Arvo Pärt begins with precise, delicate movements that become more chaotic and wild as the musical crescendo increases. As The Chicago Sun-Times described it: "Part sexy, madcap silent film with party scenes and crazy chases to nowhere and a strong sense of playful inanity reminiscent of the Marx brothers and part Scandinavian winter blues... it has a true touch of madness and dancer about it, with a central architectural element--a great slatted gray timber folding wall on wheels--helping to create a multitude of strange, almost dreamlike states."
OreloB by Kenneth Kvarnström, a sleek, futuristic work with stark lighting and innovative duets and partnering set to an electronic score by Jukka Rintamäki.
Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman's theatrical whirlwind Episode 17 brings together seventeen dancers in spiky black wigs, and is by turns funny and poignant and is packed with utterly phenomenal dancing. The work is a collection of solos, duets, trios, and large ensemble sections, set to a score incorporating witty spoken word and a Boléro-inspired piece by jazz composer Nat Simon.
"3xBoléro is a stylish, triptych of works inspired by Ravel's seemingly inexhaustible piece." -- The New Yorker
