The essence of resilient spirit is expressed eloquently as a physical, emotional, and communal rebuilding in Lucy Guerin's award-winning Structure and Sadness, called "an artfully constructed and sensitive study of fragility and memory" by Trespass Magazine (UK).
Guerin, one of Australia's most respected and popular contemporary choreographers, references the actual event of the 1970 West Gate Bridge collapse in Melbourne, Australia. The dancers literally build a set on stage, using arresting visuals and a detailed dance language as metaphors for the precarious architecture of our lives. Guerin's choreography, which brilliantly manipulates the engineering concepts of compression, suspension, torsion and failure, investigates tragedy, rebirth, and, in the end, the essence of hope.
Structure and Sadness has won a multitude of awards including an Australian Green Room award for 'Best Choreography', a Helpmann Award for 'Best Dance Work' and an 'Australian Dance Award' for Best Performance by a Company.
