Yin Mei Dance
August 4-August 8, 2010 • LIVE MUSIC
Yin Mei merges sensuous, powerful movement with visual art, paper and ink, and video projections in City of Paper, a work that explores a single, momentous year of the choreographer's childhood during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The work weaves together video projections and sophisticated computer animation, a complex musical score, and evocative movement to create a compelling dream landscape. Butoh artists Kota Yamazaki and Kanako Yokota, and Dai Jian (formerly of Shen Wei Dance Arts and currently performing with the Trisha Brown Dance Company) join and Yin Mei as featured dancers.
An original score by noted composer Richard Marriott, played live by viola virtuoso Stephanie Griffin, is layered with the music of French bossa nova singer-songwriter Camille and experimental composer Bora Yoon. City of Paper is a stirring meditation on history and perception.
