After Ted Shawn and his dancers made Jacob's Pillow their summer home
in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, they built many of the structures still on the grounds today with their own hands. Avnet House is one such cabin, designed and constructed by twin dancers John and Frank Delmar in the mid-1930s. Today this building houses the Pillow's Department of Education.

The Department of Education department manages the Intern Program in which students receive training toward professional careers in art administration or performance production. Recent alumni have gone on to find employment at organizations such as the Lincoln Center, Mark Morris Dance Group, Dance Magazine and National Public Radio.

The School at Jacob's Pillow comes under the direction of the Department of Education and provides professional advancement programs with training in the studio, on stage, and on campus. The programs are taught by faculty that include legendary and renowned artistic directors, choreographers, performers, critics, composers, scholars and others.

The Education department also provides a range of enriching Community Dance Programs. Programs range from low-cost, open dance classes for all levels during the Festival to residencies in area public schools where dance becomes an innovative way to learn academic material. On an ongoing basis, Pillow artists and staff develop unique programs that connect participants to the physical, emotional, intellectual and inspirational world of dance.
