Wetlands Trail
"One of the greatest pleasures of the Pillow experience is simply to wander."
- Jennifer Dunning, The New York Times
In opening the Pillow to the public, Ted Shawn and the Men Dancers had to
clear land so that guests could find their way through the Berkshire foothills to the Pillow doors. Continuing in that vein, the Wetlands Trail was designed in 1999 by environmentalist Peter Jensen and was hand-hewn by the Landmark Volunteers, a not-for-profit service organization that offers high school students volunteer experiences. The trail includes natural areas of interest including hemlock, hardwood, and pine stands, a New England mortarless stone wall, and a former logging trail pathway.
Another natural environment to explore on the Pillow grounds is the Tea Garden, which boasts annual and perennials plantings and has been maintained for over 25 years by horticulturist Valerie Locher.
