Box Office
This studio was originally one of the Carter family's 18th century barns, and
it was the first structure to be adapted for use by dancers when Ted Shawn relocated to the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts in 1931. Here the Men Dancers, Ted Shawn's original company of dancers, staged the first Pillow performances and it was in this studio that Agnes De Mille first heard Aaron Copland's Rodeo played for her by the composer and a young Leonard Bernstein. It was renamed to honor the contributions of board member Sandra Bakalar and her husband David in the 1980s.

Historic dance photos and programs line the walls and visiting dance companies that perform in the Ted Shawn Theatre will occasionally open the doors allowing patrons to watch warm-ups and rehearsals from the Tea Garden. Ted Shawn Circle members enjoy invitations to weekly cast parties held in this studio.

"Dance fans love to revel in the festival's history, because its story is a good one... Amid the illustrious names, the Pillow itself is always one of the chief attractions. It's simply lovely to be there."
