PillowPages May 2011: Alumni Updates

Twenty-one Pillow Student Alumni were part of the 2010 Festival Season and many others will be part of the 2011 Festival.

Paula Aarons (2010 Choreographers Lab) has founded ReGroup Dance, a new dance company with fellow choreographers and long time friends, Sophie Schapiro and Meg Weeks. The first performance took place on January 22, 2011 in Brattleboro, VT.

Lannette Álvarez (2008 Contemporary Program) is a company trainee with Ballet Hispanico, and a Teaching Artist for Ballet Hispanico's Education and Outreach, sharing artistic expression to NYC school children. She has also just joined Germaul Barnes (1992 Repertory Etudes) /Viewsic Expressions and been accepted as a LEGROS Women in Dance choreographer. This March she co-organized "Artists Responding to Global Issues" and self-produced a successful Japan Benefit Performance and Silent Auction held at Ida K. Lang Recital Hall of Hunter College which resulted in a generous cash contribution to Peace Winds Japan and Japan Emergency Network.

Emanuel Amuchastegui (2007 Ballet), joined Hamburg Ballet directed by John Neumeier after winning this year's coveted Prix de Lausanne Ballet Competition, formerly at Houston Ballet

Gotham Arts Exchange presents a shared evening of dance works by emerging choreographers, John-Mark Owen, Jessica Gaynor and Adam Barruch (2002 Contemporary).

Rachel Buschert (1998, 1999 Modern Traditions) has her own personal training business:; Jacob's Pillow recommended her as a dancer to choreographer Martha Bowers in 2004 and all these years later, she's still dancing with her.

Ryan Carlson (2009 Hip Hop) is touring Europe with Bad Boys of Dance, and will be part of the Inside/Out performance series with Dorrance Dance on August 18.

Jenny Cobuzzi (2000 Jazz) is in graduate school for Dance/Movement Therapy and counseling. She is doing some career coaching for young dancers who want to go professional. "I love that!" she writes.

OluShola Cole (2009 Cultural) is in Taipei performing in Stomp.

Ashley Fargnoli (2010 Choreographers Lab) is working on her last project in Sarajevo, the seed of which was actually planted at Jacob's Pillow. 3 Notes is in an interactive and collaborative video/ dance project including 30 dancers from Sarajevo, Mostar and Belgrade. Working at first through video exchanges, the dancers from 3 cities are creating choreography together in response to what is seen through the video interactions. Participants will work together at the end of the project during performances to take place in Belgrade, Sarajevo and Mostar.

Tripp Fountain (2005 Jazz): "Since my time at Jacob's Pillow in 2005, I've danced on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, played Mark in a summer stock production of Altar Boyz, performed on the national tours of Evita and Cats, and (after all that time in and out of school) graduated with a BFA in Drama and Minor in Psychology from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. I am currently a swing on the first national tour of Hair."

Paige Fraser, Ryan Houston, and Thomas Varvaro (2010 Contemporary Program) are apprenticing in Ailey II.

Sita Frederick (2004, 2006 Cultural Traditions) is Artistic Director, Areytos Performance Works and teaching dance at a new charter school in Harlem while continuing to build her company...and finish an MFA.

Raimon Gaiton (2003 Ballet Program) appeared on Inside/Out with John-Mark Owen and will be dancing with GrandDiva.

Jacqueline Green (2009 Contemporary) has joined Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Kenji Igus (2010 Tap) was a Harlequin Award winner and used his cash winnings to help attend the Tap Program.

Megan Jakel (2005 Contemporary) has joined Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Millicent Johnnie (1999, 2009 Cultural Traditions) spent the summer directing and choreographing Rent for Ferndale Repertory Theater in CA and teaching for Cleo Parker Robinson Dance for International Master's Week, at Dallas Black Dance Theater Summer Professional Workshop, and at ADF's Dance Professionals workshop. Her production of Ameriville for the internationally acclaimed United States Ambassadors of Music-Universes Poetry Theater is touring fall 2010-spring 2011.

Ashley Judge (2005 Ballet) danced with Atlanta Ballet and then Ballet British Columbia, before returning to Atlanta and transitioning into a professional ballroom dancer. With her partner, a former ballet dancer, she has begun competing around the nation. They earned the title of Rising Star Champions and were ranked 3rd for the National Title and 6th in the World Title in their division (Theater Arts or Cabaret) at the recent United States Dancesport Competition. She's thrilled to be starting this new dance journey--it's like learning a whole new language!

Natalie Labellarte (2004, 2010 Jazz/Musical Theatre) was one of 7 girls out of 300 called back to play "Martha May Who" in Grinchmas at Universal Studios.

Travis Magee (2002 Contemporary) is dancing with Lucinda Childs Dance Company.

Christopher Charles McDaniel (2009 Ballet) began dancing with Los Angeles Ballet in January, after leaving Dance Theatre of Harlem.

Anne O'Donnell (2010 Contemporary Program) is apprenticing with Buglisi Dance Theatre.

Eric Rivas (2010 Tap and Jazz/Musical Theatre Programs) is performing in 42nd Street at Resorts Atlantic City.

Calvin Royal III (2010 Ballet, Lorna Strassler Awardee) joined American Ballet Theatre as an apprentice in October 2010 and became a member of the corps de ballet in April 2011.

Avi Scher (2005 Ballet. Lorna Strassler Awardee) kicked off the fall creating a new work with the remarkable Sofiane Sylve, principal dancer with the San Francisco Ballet. The work, set to music by composer Timothy Andres, also featured New York City Ballet Principal Amar Ramasar and Soloist Savannah Lowery. Avi is also creating works for Ballet West and Ballet West II and will be the recipient of a Guggenheim Works & Process next fall.

Jason Sparks (2009 Jazz/Musical Theatre Program) is playing Ambrose in Hello, Dolly! with Cybill Shepherd.

Caleb Teicher (2010 Tap and Jazz/Musical Theatre Programs) is substitute teaching for some terrific tap artists in NYC and will be the Pillow guest alumnus performing at this year's A Jazz Happening taking place at Jacob's Pillow August 21, and as part of the Inside/Out performance series with Dorrance Dance on August 18.

Nina Watt (former Faculty) visited 7.31.10 on her way to a new position at the Hartt School in Hartford.

Adam Weinert (2003 Contemporary) in addition to choreographing has been performing with Ryan McNamara at P.S.1 and Festival 2011 artist Jonah Bokaer (1998 Modern) as part of the Guggenheim Works and Process Series, and with Shen Wei Dance Arts' Salon Series at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City.

Jenny Winton (2009 Ballet) is one of the newest company members at the Joffrey Ballet.

Harrison James Wynn (2008, 2009 Ballet) is now a corps de ballet member of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, joining other Pillow alums in the corps Tristan Dobrowney (2009 Ballet) and apprentices Beth Lamont and Alex Lantz (2009 Ballet).
