CHOREOGRAPHERS
LAB:
Artistic Process/Community Interaction
August
19–27, 2008
Program
Director:
Celeste
Miller
For:
12 choreographers, age 24 and up, with prior experience in producing
work for and with community groups.
Choreographic
practice and voice are stimulated and strengthened through commissioning,
residency, and collaborative opportunities conducted in community
settings such as schools, health centers, and housing projects.
This lab focuses on ways to approach community interactions that
probe, refine, and deepen the artistic process.
Artistic
statements will be refined, or crafted, over the course to identify
the resonant themes and source material specific to each choreographer.
Daily movement labs, journal writing, discussion sessions, and
selected readings and videos will delve deeply into the professional
rigor required to create community dance-making experiences while
fully involving the artist’s aesthetic points of view, inquiry,
and inspiration.
Attendance
at Festival events, including performances, talks, exhibits, and
master classes, will be an integral part of the program.

was able to purely focus on my
creative
process, being guided by
excellent
teachers and staff and being
inspired
by other students and artists."
