CULTURAL TRADITIONS: Flamenco

June 23–July 6, 2008

Directors:

Soledad Barrio and Martín Santangelo, Directors

Faculty:

Additional artists to be announced

For: 25 advanced Flamenco
dancers, age 16 and up

This will be a rare opportunity to
study a variety of flamenco dance
styles with legendary and celebrated
artists of today. Dance artists,
musicians, and scholar/historians
will lead in-depth sessions in the
techniques, rhythmic patterns and
structures, repertory, and roots of
this robust and complex art form.

The rigor and all-consuming passion
required to evoke each participant's
unique duende while seamlessly
working in partnership with live
musicians will be emphasized during
daily technique and repertory classes.
Dancers will be coached on the
carriage of the upper body and
arms and the intricate rhythms and
counter rhythms of the hands and
feet for such flamenco standards as
soleá, alegrías, and bulerías. Use of
castanets and the dancer's dress,
bata de cola, will also be included.

Informal presentations will be
held June 28 and July 5 offering
performance experience and
educating audiences about this
rich, ancestral tradition.
Attendance at Festival events,
including performances, talks,
exhibits, and master classes, will
be an integral part of the program.

"Attending this program has helped me grow as an artist, but most importantly I've grown as a person because I know more about my own culture."
