Uncover the Pillow’s Past at Blake’s Barn
Step into Blake’s Barn, the heart of dance preservation at the Pillow, and the home of the Archives. This vibrant space houses an extraordinary collection: audiotapes, films, costumes, books, photographs, posters, programs, and more—each piece a thread in the fabric of dance history.

This summer, we celebrate a remarkable milestone: Norton Owen’s 50th anniversary as Director of Preservation. Don’t miss the special exhibition Connecting Through Time: 50 Seasons with Norton Owen, which spans the main gallery and the Norton Owen Reading Room. While you’re there, explore our digital archives and uncover decades of performance history at your fingertips.

The gallery features vibrant dance portraits, and the moment captures intergenerational curiosity and connection through art.

Let’s Talk Dance
Every Saturday at 4pm, join us in Blake’s Barn for one of our free PillowTalks featuring engaging conversations with choreographers, artists, writers, and cultural leaders. These intimate discussions offer unique insights into the social, cultural, and historical forces shaping contemporary dance and performance.

Highlights from Festival 2024 include the Obsessed with Light PillowTalk, centered on the new 90-minute documentary about pioneering dancer Loïe Fuller. The film weaves together mesmerizing visual archives and illuminating commentary from artistic visionaries like Bill T. Jones, William Kentridge, and MOMIX’s Moses Pendleton, revealing Fuller’s far-reaching impact on the worlds of dance, art, and technology.

For those curious to dive deeper before the curtain rises, our Pre-Show Talks offer a thoughtful introduction to the performance ahead. Led by Pillow Scholars-in-Residence, these free 15-minute talks take place 30 minutes before each Ted Shawn Theatre show in Sommerspace at Blake’s Barn.

Explore the Great Outdoors
Nature lovers, don’t miss Jacob’s Garden. Founded in 2021 and inspired by Ted Shawn’s original 1931 “friendship garden,” this lush space is a living tribute to community, connection, and cultivation. The garden nurtures a variety of fruits, vegetables, native flowers, and herbs while honoring the land’s layered histories. Want to dig deeper? Join one of our Public Garden Tours for a guided exploration.
