Carlos Bauzys
Musical Theatre Musical Director, The School at Jacob's Pillow
Carlos Bauzys is a Brazilian composer, music director, conductor, educator, and musical theatre writer whose work explores the relationship between music and movement through body percussion, dance, theatre, and vocal performance. For more than two decades, he has developed an interdisciplinary artistic practice that bridges rhythm, storytelling, and cultural exchange, collaborating with artists and institutions throughout Brazil and the United States.
A specialist in vocal music, rhythm, and ensemble performance, Carlos has worked extensively as a composer, arranger, orchestrator, conductor, and music director across musical theatre, dance, concert music, and arts education. His work is distinguished by its rhythmic vitality, collaborative spirit, and commitment to creating meaningful connections between performers and audiences.
Bauzys served as Music Director of Barbatuques, the internationally acclaimed Brazilian body percussion ensemble whose innovative approach to music-making has inspired artists around the world. His longstanding exploration of rhythm as both musical and physical expression has led to numerous collaborations that bring together musicians, dancers, actors, and educators in shared creative experiences.
He is the co-creator, composer, arranger, and music director of BARBA: Brazilian Body Percussion Musical, an original theatrical work that celebrates Brazilian culture through music, body percussion, movement, and storytelling. Developed through years of artistic research, performance, and educational outreach, the project has become a central focus of his creative life and reflects his belief in the body as a powerful instrument for communication and artistic expression.
His contributions to dance include composing the score for Aroeira, choreographed by Anelita Gallo for the São Paulo Companhia Jovem de Dança (2026); orchestrating Bioglomerata for the São Paulo City Ballet and the São Paulo Municipal Orchestra; and creating Tap&Tom: Tap Dance & Tom Jobim, an original work exploring the dialogue between Brazilian music and tap dance.
An active educator and mentor, Carlos has taught and led workshops for students, artists, and communities in a wide variety of settings. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from São Paulo State University (UNESP) and a Master of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre Writing from New York University.
