COMMON WAYS TO GIVE THROUGH LONG-TERM PLANS
Start your legacy with Jacob’s Pillow with a gift in your estate plan. We’ve partnered with FreeWill, a free online tool that guides you through creating your will or trust in just 20 minutes! You can use this resource on its own or use it to document your wishes before finalizing your plans with an attorney. While creating your plan, it makes it simple to designate a planned gift to Jacob’s Pillow that leaves a lasting impact on the growth and inspiration of artists for years to come.
These assets often face high taxes—naming us as beneficiary avoids that.
Beneficiary Designations
Some assets are not covered by your will—these are called non-probate assets. They include retirement accounts (such as IRAs, 401(k)s, and 403(b)s) and life insurance policies (covered separately below).
For these assets, you must name beneficiaries directly with your account provider or plan administrator. By doing so, you can:
- Ensure your loved ones (and charities you care about) are provided for
- Avoid unnecessary legal steps (probate)
- Quickly and easily name Jacob’s Pillow as a beneficiary of one or more accounts
Use this online tool to help you organize and review your beneficiary designations.
Retirement Plan Assets (IRA, 401(k), 403(b))
A gift through your retirement plan is one of the most tax-wise ways to support Jacob’s Pillow:
- Why: Distributions to heirs are often taxed as income and may be subject to estate tax—sometimes totaling up to 70%. You can name Jacob’s Pillow as your sole beneficiary, or as one of several alongside your loved ones.
- How: Simply complete a beneficiary designation form with your plan administrator, no attorney required.
Note: If you are over 70 ½ years of age, you can request a direct transfer from your administrator of up to $100,000 from your IRA. This gift also counts toward your required minimum distribution, making it totally tax-free. It’s as simple as visiting your IRA administrator’s website.
You can make a gift by naming Jacob’s Pillow as the full or partial beneficiary of a life insurance policy. This option allows you to keep ownership of the policy and continue to access its cash value if needed. Because you retain ownership, there is no charitable income-tax deduction at the time you make the designation. However, when the death benefit is ultimately paid to Jacob’s Pillow, your estate will receive a charitable estate-tax deduction.
