Behind the Magic: Moments of Connection at the 2026 Season Opening Gala
The 2026 Season Opening Gala was something straight out of a movie. As an intern here at Jacob’s Pillow this summer, the opportunity to witness this night unfold wasn't just exciting, but also a unique look into what makes this place so special: our community.
Beginning of the Night
The evening kicked off with an electric opening performance by Berkshire Bateria, a local Brazilian percussion collective. The energy was infectious and had the arriving crowd dancing and people jumping with joy.
Performance in Ted Shawn Theatre
Naturally, as a dance festival, the main event was the showcase inside the Ted Shawn Theatre, and the lineup was nothing short of incredible. The School’s Contemporary Ballet Performance Ensemble shared a world premiere by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Xin Ying from Martha Graham Dance Company performed a duet alongside video footage of Martha Graham’s “Letter to Nobody,” BODYTRAFFIC shared one of their final performances which felt simultaneously powerful and gentle, M.A.D.D. Rhythms closed out the performances with a rhythmic piece like no other, and of course I can’t forget to mention the presentation of the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award to Tiler Peck (who also graced us with two beautiful duets).
Following the performance, the crowd spilled outside of the theater with wonder in their eyes. Guests, attendees, and artists who hadn't seen each other for months, and some years, shared warm embraces and caught up. There was something incredibly heartwarming about seeing how art can bring us together.
Hearing from the Visionary Behind the Evening
An event this seamlessly executed doesn't happen by accident. To learn more about how this magical atmosphere comes together, we sat down with our Donor Relations and Special Events Manager, Lily Moreschi, to discuss how community is woven into the very fabric of the evening.
Bringing our community together is at the core of the Gala. We intentionally design spaces to encourage socialization from the cocktail hour and strategic seating charts to transforming the Café Tent into a comfortable lounge. Every detail is curated to spark conversation and connection.

To truly center the community, ensuring a diverse representation of age groups and backgrounds is vital.
It is so important to have all our constituents represented: patrons, artists, and community members alike. My favorite manifestation of this is the dance floor after dinner. Regardless of age or background, everyone flocks to the floor, and that collective energy radiates throughout the campus. Those hours of pure harmony and unity capture the exact essence of what makes dance so special.

Dancing the Night Away
As my first time at the Pillow’s Season Opening Gala, I witnessed an indescribable feeling in the air that night. Everywhere you looked, the Pillow community was laughing, chatting, and reconnecting. For a moment, life’s external stresses completely disappeared, and everyone was united in celebrating the art of dance. How? By dancing, of course!
My absolute favorite part of the night was the dance floor, a place where family, friends, and artists showed off their best moves and grooves.
The live band brought electric energy, constantly interacting with the crowd. At one point, the lead singer passed the microphone around while singing “Pink Pony Club,” and the entire tent went absolutely wild. Watching world-class artists, staff, long-time Pillow fans and first-timers alike singing and dancing side-by-side was a beautiful experience to be a part of.
What's Next?
Leaving the tent that night, the magic that everyone always associates with Jacob's Pillow finally made perfect sense to me. The Gala didn't just celebrate dance; it celebrated the beautiful, diverse community that keeps the Pillow alive. It left all of us inspired, deeply connected, and wanting so much more for the season ahead.
