The stars are aligned and we’ve got your dance horoscope for Festival 2025, including which of our summer performances will best light up your celestial leanings! We’re also bringing you the perfect Jacob’s Pillow Archive video to match your Zodiac vibe–from the bold performances of Rennie Harris to the humanistic work of Liz Lerman. If you needed a reason to join us this summer, this is your sign!
Aries are bold, passionate, and competitive—they’ll never back down from a challenge on the dance floor! We’re reminded of showstopping performances by The Hood Lockers, Ephrat Asherie Dance, and Rennie Harris Puremovement. Harris’s Rome and Jewels, a recasting of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, is a perfect watch for any Aries with an emotional storyline and intense dance battles. This summer, The Center Will Not Hold: A Dorrance Dance Production is a can’t miss for an Aries!

Taurus—grounded, sensual, and tenacious—reminds us of the social dance form of Tango, known for its authenticity in intimate interactions between dancers. We’ve seen Tango performed on the Pillow’s stages by Tangueros del Sur in 2011 and most recently by Social Tango Project in 2024, among others. Any Taurus would love En el Abrazo by Tangueros del Sur, an exploration of different forms of Tango and the golden age of the dance form in the 1940s and 50s. We think Taurus’s will love Sekou McMiller & Friends this summer, who’ll bring musical flair and explosive energy to the stage with Afro Latin Dance.

Curious and quick-witted, Gemini brings to mind modern and postmodern choreographers such as Bill T. Jones and Trisha Brown, whose witty, genre-defining work pushed the boundaries of concert dance. For our intelligent Geminis, we’d recommend watching a snippet of D-Man in the Waters by Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, which will be performed this summer in the Ted Shawn Theatre. We also think Geminis would go crazy for Eun-Me Ahn’s Dragons in the new Doris Duke Theatre, featuring holographic choreography.

Nurturing, sensitive, and loving, Cancers crave connection—we think they’ll resonate with a ballet pas de deux, or duet. While our archives are filled with emotional and delicate pas de deuxs, After the Rain, a duet choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon and performed in summer 2024 by The Royal Ballet, is perfect a Cancer. This sign will love the stunning visual motifs and moments of intimate, sensitive connection. This summer, Cancers can’t miss the “visually stunning and emotionally profound” (PBS) performances by Ballet BC.

Leos are confident; they’re at their best when they can own the room. That’s why our pick for a Leo is New Zealand-based Black Grace, who radiates on stage with movement drawn from traditional Maori and Samoan dance, western modern dance, and everyday influences like football fields and construction zones. Black Grace commands the room in a clip of O Le Olaga – Life, captured during their Pillow Debut in 2004. Our recommendation to Leos for a performance this summer would be the acclaimed Stephen Petronio Company.

Analytical, meticulous, organized… does that ring any bells for a certain ballet technique? The methodical nature of Virgos reminds us of George Balanchine’s technique and aesthetic, known for its formality, structure, and quickness. Virgos can see this at the forefront in Pacific Northwest Ballet’s performance of Red Angels, in which choreographer Ulysses Dove sought to evoke the Balanchine aesthetic. For Festival 2025, we think The Sarasota Ballet is a must-see for any Virgo, with a world premiere by Jessica Lang, Pacific Northwest Ballet’s Resident Choreographer and Sarasota Ballet’s Artist in Residence.

Libras are charming—they can bring harmony and amiability to people or situations that might not seem to go together. That’s why we’d pair them with the work of Keigwin + Company, where choreographer and company director Larry Keigwin harmonizes pop and classical music. Bringing together these artforms, the suites by Keigwin + Company might be characterized as striking a balance between “high” and “low” art. Los Angeles-based BODYTRAFFIC would be a perfect Festival performance for any Libra, featuring a work set to the discography of Etta James.

Scorpios are intense, passionate, and perceptive; but as a water sign, they have a vulnerable side, too. We think Scorpios would love the work of Noche Flamenca, headed by Martín Santangelo and his wife, Soledad Barrio and known as one of Spain’s most successful flamenco companies. Noche Flamenca brings together all aspects of flamenco—dance, song, and music—for spellbinding performances with intensity and drive. This summer, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is a must-see for Scorpios, with their intensely physical and emotional signature works.

Ever adventurous and optimistic, Sagittarius are pulled to the possibilities of the future. For that reason, we’ve paired this sign with technology-foreword works like Compagnie Käfig’s Pixel. Director-choreographer Mourad Merzouki worked with digital artists Adrien Mondot and Claire Bardainne to create a work that balanced movement with abstract representations, resulting in a visually stunning and immersive performance. Similar to Pixel, a Sagittaurius will love Here, Andrew Schneider’s exploration of connection and storytelling premiering in the new Doris Duke Theatre this summer.

Disciplined and determined are words that describe not only Capricorns, but also groundbreaking dancer and choreographer Dormeshia, who was hailed by The New York Times as “the queen of tap.” Known for her ambitious standards in the world of tap dance, Dormeshia began making waves in the industry at an early age when she made her Broadway debut as a teenager in Black and Blue. Capricorns will admire this clip of Dormeshia in Unsung Sheroes of the 20th Century, saluting one of Dormeshia’s inspirations, Juanita Pitts. In Festival 2025, Capricorns should be sure to see the commanding and genre-defying work of Trinity Irish Dance Company.

Aquarius are imaginative and inspiring, constantly seeking new ideas and experiences with a humanist perspective. We think Aquarius will connect with Liz Lerman, one of the earliest innovators in mixing media and technology with dance. Lerman’s Wicked Bodies, described as a history of “wildly creative women,” is a perfect watch for any Aquarius. Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, another dance group at the forefront of innovation and imagination, should be on an Aquarius’s watchlist for Festival 2025.

As the final sign of the zodiac cycle, Pisces synthesizes the characteristics of the entire zodiac; this sign tends to be creative, empathetic, and intuitive. Pisces reminds us of Tania Pérez-Salas, who’s work as an actress, dancer, and choreographer has spanned dance, theater, and feature films. Her work Waters of Forgetfulness, performed at the Pillow by Compañía de Danza in 2006, submerged the entire stage of the Ted Shawn Theatre in water to reflect the symbolic role of water as a vital, life-giving force. Pisces will also resonate with Touch of Red, in which Shamel Pitts | TRIBE will transform the Doris Duke Theatre into a stylized boxing ring.
