Kate Davis’ triumphant debut album, Trophy, blends precise pop melodies with raw, emotive lyrics and a rock ’n’ roll edge. The album, which explores the loss of Davis’s father and the growing pains of early adulthood, marks the culmination of over two decades of musical training for the 27-year-old songwriter, who started her career as a sought-after jazz bassist and vocalist in New York. Having written the entirety of Trophy in her Harlem bedroom over a three-year period, Davis launched a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign in 2017 to fund the album’s recording and production. The result is that rare thing: an album made entirely according to the vision of its artist, and introducing a masterly and propulsive new talent.
