About

Dance Education Laboratory (DEL) at Jacob’s Pillow: Social Tango Project

This workshop took place on July 21, 2024.

Workshop Facilitators: Ann Biddle (Director, DEL at Jacob’s Pillow) and Felice Santorelli (DEL Facilitator).

DELve into an interactive and embodied workshop that uses multiple lenses to explore the dynamic dance form of Tango as participants learn to consider how to bring Tango into the dance classroom in a culturally sustaining way.

In this workshop participants:

  • Learn the fundamental principles of communication inherent in tango from Social Tango Project Artistic and General Directors Agustina Videla and Ramon de Oliveira Cezar
  • Explore different approaches to looking at a choreographer’s work
  • Engage in embodied research
  • Participate in movement exploration and collaborative dance-making
  • Discover applications of workshop content to dance education

Drawing from the extensive resources of Jacob’s Pillow Dance Interactive, participants engage in meaningful dance learning activities that explore diverse dance artists, genres, and eras within a cultural, historic, and social context. Multi-modal teaching strategies include movement observation, embodied reflection, reconstruction practices, collaborative research, and collective dance-making.

Workshop registrants will receive a 20% discount to the same-day matinee performance of Social Tango Project in the Ted Shawn Theatre, subject to ticket availability.
