Mixing dance and theater, Lida Winfield presents Imaginary, in collaboration with Ellen Smith Ahern, Joseph Hall Laurel Jenkins and Maree ReMalia, a deep, quirky, innovative, and socially poignant work that explores perception in relation to imagination, commissioned in part by Jacob’s Pillow through the National Performance Network. The work addresses the fact that imagination is a nearly universal human trait, though it is shaped by both personal and environmental factors. Winfield believes that our country is at a critical juncture and that it is hard to know what is real, alleged, and what will unfold. Imaginary will engage community and audience members on how the imagination assists in shaping the potential and reality of our world.
Imaginary is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation Fund Project co-commissioned by The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts in partnership with Jacob’s Pillow, Middlebury Performing Arts Series, and The Yard.

Sarah Elgart | Arrogant Elbow engages audiences by transforming and catalyzing stages, screens, and sites, and painting them with singular visuals and visceral movement drawn from the quotidian human experience. Inspired by the fact that light from a star is actually memory made visible, Shape of Memory is a roving, site-specific work that begins on the stage then moves through the Pillow grounds melding gravity, distance, and scale, to explore how memory inhabits the body and the self, the individual and the collective.
With an original score by composer/guitarist Nels Cline of Wilco, in collaboration with composer Paul Chavez of FeltLike, Shape of Memory is a work about the ephemerality of dance and life and reclaiming things lost in the face of the unstoppable passage of time. The work seeks to create a new memory and leave a lingering “ghost imprint” in the viewers’ experience.

Under the co-artistic direction of Jessie Jeanne Stinnett and award-winning, Dutch-Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili, Boston Dance Theater (BDT) is Boston’s first contemporary dance repertory company with international ties at the leadership level. With a commitment to presenting works of socio-political relevance that challenge the edges of current world issues, BDT matches the talents of Boston-based dancers with those of acclaimed global choreographers in a tour de force of performative dynamism, community connection, and trans-national ambassadorship.
The program includes Deeper Inscription (working title), a new quintet by New York City-based Sidra Bell, that frames the female body as a radical kaleidoscope with the capacity to create common ground for a shared movement vocabulary. BDT also performs Yin Yue’s Today for Now, set to the music of iconic singer/songwriter Janis Joplin. This new work explores a meeting of inner sensitivity and outward wildness. Vigorously physical and unapologetically loud, the work unveils a tribe of dancers tasked with driving one another forward as they join forces to celebrate an unbroken lineage of upstanding women.

Berkshire-based artists and community leaders will spend two weeks in July creating a collaborative performance that illuminates marginalized narratives, breaks down regional silos, and deepens connections through creative practice. The work, shepherded by NYC-based Angela’s Pulse, will be performed on both the Inside/Out stage and at the Berkshire NAACP’s 45th annual Gather-In on July 28 in Pittsfield. Grounded in the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond’s principles of Undoing Racism & Community Organizing and Urban Bush Women’s Entering, Building, and Exiting Community framework, the Angela’s Pulse team of artist-organizers—MK Abadoo, Matthew Dicken, Paloma McGregor and Rosa Navarrete—spent the first half of 2018 on a listening tour of Pittsfield and surrounding communities. Beyond July, outgrowths of this work will be woven into locally generated events, seeding possibilities for future visioning and organizing. This work was commissioned by Jacob’s Pillow, in partnership with the Working Cities initiative, and made possible by funding from the Ford Foundation.
