Becoming a great artist requires experiences, resources and relationships
that direct and guide mastery in the field. These necessary elements can be found at The School at Jacob's Pillow along with a natural, serene setting and an environment of complete dance immersion.

Five distinct professional advancement programs provide experiences in the studio, on stage, and on campus that are critical to artistic advancement. Ballet, Contemporary Traditions, Jazz/Musical Theatre Dance, Choreographers Lab and Cultural Traditions are taught by faculty that includes legendary and renowned artistic directors, choreographers, performers, critics, composers, scholars and others. Program participants are an international mix of technically and artistically accomplished dancers, many of whom have already earned recognition as Grand Prix finalists, Presidential Scholars in the Arts, choreographers, company members, apprentices or scholarship awardees.

At the Festival, students, artists and audiences immerse themselves in an international world of dance. There is a range of movement styles, choreographic approaches and world traditions along with premieres, commissioned works, company debuts and Pillow exclusives. Attending Festival performances is part of The School curriculum, and students are invited to attend talks by Pillow Scholars-in-Residence and authorities in the field, browse photographic exhibits and study in the extensive dance Archives.

This professional development experience can empower dancers to be the artists they envision. Accomplished Pillow alumni include Nikolaj Hübbe, Meredith Monk and Mia Michaels. Others have gone on to perform on Broadway and dance with companies such as Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Mark Morris Dance Group, New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and more.
