Stijn Celis is the artistic ballet director at the Saarländische Staatstheater in Germany and a 2015 Choreographer for Ballet BC. As a dancer, he performed with Contemporary Dance Zurich, Le Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, Royal Ballet of Flanders, and Zurich Ballet. He began his career as a choreographer, at the invitation of Mats Ek, who asked him to choreograph the opening performance of the 1997 Holland Festival. Since then, Celis has created work for Ballet Nürnberg, Bern Ballet, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Nederlands Dans Theater II, and Royal Swedish Ballet. Celis has been a short term scholar at The Juilliard School. Recent choreographic commissions include a new full length Romeo and Juliet for the Semperopera Ballet, Ondine for Aalto Ballett, and AWE for Ballet BC. He is also know for his work in opera and theater. His company Saarländisches Staatstheater is noted for its explosive, grounded, and sensual qualities. Celis' work has been in the repertory of Festival companies and he was Guest Choreographer for the 2011 Contemporary Program.
