Dancers of the Contemporary Program are apprentices, advanced pre-professionals, and early-career professionals from leading dance companies and training centers around the world. Darrell Grand Moultrie, Jae Man Joo, and Didy Veldman—three of today’s most sought-after, and stylistically diverse, contemporary choreographers will create new work on the ensemble of dancers.
Renowned mentor, choreographer, and Horton technique expert Milton Myers returns for his 33rd summer as Director of the Contemporary Program, joined by Dutch artistic director, choreographer, and contemporary teacher Didy Veldman. Renowned artist faculty joining the two are Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s Rehearsal Director Lucas Crandall; Ballet Master for Alonzo King LINES Ballet Arturo Fernandez; Aya Kaneko, School alumna and Myers’ assistant; expert of Forsythe technique Thomas McManus; one of Britain’s leading contemporary technique teachers Kerry Nicholls; Head Faculty at Manhattan Youth Ballet Deborah Wingert; and John Levis, Music Director.

Hailed as one of the most captivating dance troupes in the Midwest, The Wylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Company (WHDC) proudly calls Kansas City home. Known for its diverse artists, the company’s mission is to present the best of American contemporary dance through exposure to nationally renowned and emerging artists. WHCDC has a bold, athletic style with repertoire ranging from the lyrical to the avant garde. The company does not shy away from using dance as a vehicle to address social issues to spark perspective and speak to the human spirit. Performances are given in both conventional and non-traditional spaces to introduce contemporary dance to audiences in urban and rural communities.

One of New York City’s most celebrated on the rise immersive dance theater companies, Breton Follies is the incubator for in house choreographer Breton Tyner-Bryan a CUNY 2018 Artist in Residence, New York Theater Barn Choreography Lab recipient for new musicals, AMDA commissioned artist, and Chance to Dance contest finalist at Jacob’s Pillow. With a cinematic approach to movement, the company’s vernacular is rooted in classical ballet, cabaret, and latin rhythms, while honoring the style and sounds of the 1940s–1970s in musical theater. Celebrating the female form while debunking behavioral expectations based on gender, this program explores humanity as expressed through the characters that inhabit the world of Breton Follies.

Calpulli Mexican Dance Company returns to the Inside/Out stage for the second time, just before they bring traditional Mexican folklorico to downtown Pittsfield’s Third Thursday on July 19. Celebrating the rich diversity of Mexican and Mexican-American cultural heritage through its unique artistic vision, Calpulli Mexican Dance Company performs as a family of dancers, musicians, and teachers—named after the Aztec word for clan (Calpulli). They present excerpts of the work Boda Mexicana (Mexican Wedding), compiling over 15 years of the company’s repertoire to tell a story that spans time and place by bringing together native and Hispanic celebrations and rituals.

PrioreDance is a contemporary dance company based in Washington, DC, and led by Artistic Director Robert J. Priore. The company focuses on creating choreography based in human connection and personal experience, focusing on the physical manifestation of human touch, or lack thereof. Using music as the framework of the storylines, PrioreDance presents the work Casita and the duet Michael, both by Robert J. Priore.

Kate Harpootlian & Artists brings together a diverse group of individuals from Los Angeles and New York. This musical theater-style ensemble performs the evening-length work Better Late Than Never, which explores the concept of transition versus the finality of destination. Set in 1960s America, the work features popular music and costumes reminiscent of a time in history riddled with change.

Los Angeles-based Barak Ballet presents contemporary dance work that captivates audiences, invokes thought, and expands the art form of ballet. The company thrives on dynamic partnerships with dancers, choreographers, composers, musicians, designers, and media artists, and the resulting works radiate artistic excellence and collaboration. Barak Ballet’s repertoire features a range of athletic pas de deux to syncopated group work. They perform the duet Moments by Darrell Grand Moultrie as well as a new work by Artistic Director Melissa Barak.

With thrilling feats of acrobatics performed in traditional costumes, Dancing Crane Georgian Dance Ensemble presents traditional music and dance from the country of Georgia. Founded in 1996, Brooklyn, NY-based Dancing Crane Georgian Dance Ensemble is committed to studying and accurately representing Georgian folk traditions. Led by Victor Sirelson, former performer with the Aman Folk Ensemble of Los Angeles, the ensemble features a unique mix of local talent and professional performers, showcasing the demanding and refined technique with elegance and grace. Performing choreograpy by Vladimer “Dato” Goderidze, the dancers excel in the virtuoso leaps, turns, and the traditional, tseruli, or men’s dancing on the toes. The repertoire includes Parikaoba mountain dances with swords, the elegant Osuri court dances, the ancient Samaya women’s dance, the city dances of the Kinto and Karachokheli, as well as the regional folk dances such as those from Acharia and Svaneti. Presented in collaboration with the Center for Traditional Music and Dance.

Bruce Wood Dance (BWD) harnesses the power of contemporary dance to entertain, enrich, and heal through high-caliber, original choreography performed by dynamic artists. Bruce Wood was a prolific choreographer who created more than 80 diverse works in his career. Current Artistic Director Kimi Nikaidoh leads this Dallas-based company forward, presenting treasured pieces from Wood’s repertoire as well as new commissions. The company currently boasts ground-breaking dances by choreographers like Yin Yue, Bessie-nominated Katarzyna Skarpetowska, and Princess Grace awardees Bryan Arias and Bridget L. Moore.
BWD presents excerpts from four repertory works including Bryan Arias’ My Heart Remembers, All Things New by Kimi Nikaidoh, a trio taken from Bruce Wood’s all-male, multigenerational, evening-length work, My Brother’s Keeper, and Katarzyna Skarpetowska’s entrancing Yesod.

Boundary-breaking and genre-blurring, Canadian choreographer and dancer Emma Portner is known for her online viral contemporary dance films and collaborations with artists like Justin Bieber and Ellen Page. Portner makes her Pillow debut with an evening of duets featuring regular collaborators Ajani Johnson-Goffe, Brian Davis, and Chantelle Good, among others. An Evening of Twos investigates several dichotomies including private and public, quiet and loud, and seen and watched.
