About

Dancerly Intelligences
August 9-13, 2023

Dance and technology have intertwined since the moment humans started moving together around a fire, one of the first and most important human inventions. Millions of years later, we’re dancing with robots, choreographing with AI, and watching performances in augmented reality – and yet, we’re simply continuing the human tradition of exploring our technological advancements through physical movement on the canvas of time.

Dancerly Intelligences is your opportunity to join us at today’s intersection of dance and technology. Here, you get to witness work in development by artists who, for example, play with our relationship with recorded sound, question the entertainment industry’s motion capture archives, and even dance with robots as duet partners. The Pillow is embarking on a new strand of its work, the exploration of which will culminate in the opening of the new Doris Duke Theatre.

During our first Dancerly Intelligences residencies this summer, you get the chance to look inside the process of developing new works, ask questions from the artists first-hand, and be part of the Pillow’s commitment to providing space and opportunity to these artists who are innovating the future of dance.

About the Artists

Grisha Coleman is a time-based artist working in performance and experiential media. She’s using her time with Dancerly Intelligences to experiment with projections on various physical objects as she develops motion portraits of people overlooked by current motion capture efforts.

Catie Cuan is a pioneer in the nascent field of ‘choreorobotics’. She’s using her residency to choreograph her part of an 8-hour robot duet.

Andrew Schneider is an OBIE award-winning, Drama Desk nominated performer, writer, and interactive-electronics artist. He’s using his time at Jacob’s Pillow to explore impossible synchronicities in movement between two people and sound.
