John Levis

John Levis is a composer, pianist, and synthesist who has been involved with the Philadelphia dance community since 1971. A graduate of the University of the Arts, he has worked with Philadelphia schools and companies including Gwendolyn Bye Dance Center, PHILADANCO!, Temple University, The Rock School of Dance Education, and The University of the Arts, where he is Accompanist Coordinator for the School of Dance. In 1995, he was commissioned by Dance Spotlight to compose and perform the musical score for two videos/DVDs on Lester Horton technique, with staff and dancers from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. His ballet scores include one composed for Milton Myers commissioned by PHILADANCO! for their 35th anniversary at the Kimmel Center for The Performing Arts in Philadelphia in 2004. Levis presented a new work in April 2018, as part of the Suzanne Roberts Theater spring season, commissioned by Roni Koresh, Artistic Director of the Koresh Dance Company. Levis continues to produce independent film projects and compose instrumental compositions of all kinds. This is Levis’ 23rd year on faculty.
