We feel it is important to provide artists with high-quality performance documentation.

With the upgrade to high-definition (HD) video documentation in 2010, the options have both multiplied and become more nuanced. Please read the following closely, discuss with your video editor, and email us at the addresses located at the bottom of the page if you have any questions.

Complimentary Documentation

Each Ted Shawn Theatre and Doris Duke Theatre company receives 1 MP4 file Vimeo link of an HD two camera mix for download. Inside/Out and Pillow Lab artists receive 1 MP4 file Vimeo link of their HD one camera shoot for download. Artists must download their complimentary file by September 31, 2019, as the links may expire at this time.

Additional Documentation Options

  • DVDs in either Standard Definition (compatible with all players and computers) or Blu-ray (which only work on Blu-Ray players) cost $35 for 1st copy and $20 for each additional copy. Ted Shawn Theatre and Doris Duke Theatre artists may purchase DVDs of their close camera, wide camera, or two-camera mix videos. Inside/Out artists and Pillow Lab artists may purchase DVDs of their single-camera video.
  • Full web-ready footage (Ted Shawn Theatre/Doris Duke Theatre only) – $35.00 for the close camera and wide camera MP4 files. These files are web-ready compressed video (good for uploading to YouTube and/or Vimeo).
  • High-definition raw MOV footage – $100. Recommended for archiving and professional editing. Raw footage is processed and transferred onto a new external hard drive Mac/PC compatible (please specify which) provided by Jacob’s Pillow. Ted Shawn Theatre and Doris Duke Theatre artists will receive their close camera, wide camera, and two-camera mix videos. Inside/Out artists and Pillow Lab artists will receive their single-camera video.

FAQ

1. How do you document our performances?

In 2010 we upgraded our video to High Definition, recording on the Sony XDCAM EX1. Performances in the Ted Shawn Theatre and in the Doris Duke Theatre are filmed on two cameras. One camera is the wide shot to capture all the action and the second camera hones in on specific moments while keeping to the full body. We mix the shows live on an HD video mixer. At Inside/Out we film with one camera staying as wide as the action on stage.

2. Will the files be in HD (high-definition)?

Your complimentary MP4 file is a high-definition web file. However, it has been compressed to a smaller size to be able to upload online and move/share faster. The raw footage MOV files are the highest possible quality documentation of your performance and are available for purchase.

3. Will the files work on my computer?

The MP4 files should be compatible with most computer media players. MP4 files can also be uploaded to a video streaming service such as Vimeo or YouTube for viewing and sharing.
The raw footage MOV files may not be compatible with all computer media players

If your computer cannot play the test MOV file, you may need to get a different media player – we recommend downloading the free open-source media player VLC, which is compatible with most systems. Or you can rely on a professional video editor to view/transfer/edit your MOV files for you.

4. If I purchase extra files, how long will transfer of files take?

It will take a minimum of 3 hours for transfer and potentially longer depending on file size and staff workload. MP4 files will be sent to you digitally as Vimeo links for download. MOV files will be given to you on an external hard drive. If we’re unable to load a drive before your departure, the drive will be mailed to the address you provided on the Artist Media Order Form.

5. When should I turn in the video order form?

You should turn in the Artist Media Order Form by opening night of your engagement.

6. Can I get the footage after the Festival is over?

Yes, but the wait time may be longer. For best service, deal directly with the Video Department during your engagement.

Between May 31 and August 31, please direct questions to the Video Department (or email videographer@jacobspillow.org). From September through May, contact Patsy Gay at pgay@jacobspillow.org.
