For 24 early-career, company-ready, or advanced-level creative artists with multi-form/genre dance training who are open and ready for a collaborative cultural immersion experience. Dancers are encouraged to have keen focus, boundless imagination, and a strong desire for evolution. And joy…lots of joy. Minimum age 16.  Dancers will need to meet Jacob’s Pillow COVID-compliant protocols, which will be announced in 2022 and subject to change pending new developments.

“This program highlights both the vibrancy and profound historical legacy of Afro-Latino/a/x/e identity and culture while acknowledging its invisibility and erasure in America. AfroLatinidad connections are reflected in our ancestors who migrated here and are carried forward by the new generation – some claiming Latinx and some not; as no one term can uniformly capture our identities. The creative team will be guiding a culturally immersive process where dancers integrate a range of dance styles with media, poetry, and spoken word, celebrating the beautiful facets and kaleidoscope of colors making up the Latin Community. My choreography is a fusion of technique, numerous dance styles, and human movement. I strive to create a rehearsal environment that presents opportunities to gain self-awareness, mind and body connection, and be a conscientious mover.” ~ Maria Torres

Weekly performance opportunities enable the Performance Ensemble to share ideas and work generated before Festival audiences. The first program week concludes with an informal work-in-process showing in the Perles Family Studio. The second program culminates with dancers appearing on the iconic outdoor stage before a live and live-streamed Pillow audience. All presentations are part of the Jacob’s Pillow 90th Anniversary Festival Celebration.

Studio days for the Dance Theatre Performance Ensemble will include Latin jazz, improvisational explorations, and authentic partnering fundamentals drawing from Afro-Caribbean dances of Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, among others. During creative development rehearsals, dancers will explore the interplay between tradition and innovation as well as the entwining of multiple identities to create a highly-charged dance theatre work. In-depth coaching and mentoring will strengthen dancers’ artistic voices and help them develop as distinguished performer-collaborators in the field.

The Jacob’s Pillow School Experience is a full immersion in the stamina, perseverance, entrepreneurial, collaborative, and creative voracity required to live and work as a dance professional. This international, conservatory style studio curriculum extends far beyond the studio day. It also includes:

  • Discussing Dance Works curated for viewing from the Jacob’s Pillow Archive
  • Career-building Seminars on achieving the momentum needed to confidently and resiliently forge ahead in the field
  • Assignments connected to the choreographic process or camera techniques for dance film or social media postings
  • Attending 90th Anniversary Season performances, talks, and other events occurring on two stages and across the Jacob’s Pillow grounds
  • Researching personal dance interests and assignments in the Jacob’s Pillow Archives
  • Building a Career Network for your future from interactions with peers, staff, artist faculty, artistic directors, company members, dance supporters, audiences, community members, and visitors

Together, these experiences instill artistic growth, an artistic point of view, and a vision of the possibilities that exist in dance; all the while building an influential career network.
